Description
This spherical decorative vessel is a Peruvian mate burilado, a traditional form of folk art from the Huancayo region, specifically the villages of Cochas Chico and Cochas Grande. The piece is crafted from a dried gourd (Lagenaria siceraria) and features intricate zoomorphic figures carved in deep relief. The iconography includes a hummingbird in flight, a fish with defined scales and fins, and a long-necked aquatic bird. A black pigment or stain has been applied to the recessed carved areas and the circular rim to provide a high-contrast finish against the naturally mottled, amber-hued gourd skin. The vessel is designed with a small top opening and a slightly flattened base for stability.
