Lot 360:
Description
This lot features a pair of hand-carved banded onyx bookends and a advertising tin. The bookends depict a seated figure in a sombrero, known as a siesta or sleeping peon, leaning against a stylized three-pronged cactus. Each bookend is mounted on a rectangular base with a rounded front edge. The stone displays natural banding in shades of cream, honey-amber, and brown. The advertising tin is a circular lithographed tinplate container for Propert’s Leather and Saddle Soap, manufactured in Hull, England, and distributed by Reckitt and Colman Overseas Ltd. The lid features a detailed graphic of a rider in traditional equestrian attire jumping a fence on horseback. The tin includes a mechanical metal twist-lever opener on the side. Text on the lid includes Specially Prepared Propert’s, Leather and Saddle Soap, and Not Suitable for Suede. The base provides directions for use and manufacturer details. 7 in high
