Description
A trio of mid-20th-century American vanity powder compacts manufactured by Zell Fifth Avenue and Elgin American. The collection consists of two square compacts and one circular compact, all constructed from gold-tone metal. The first Zell Fifth Avenue square compact features an engraved floral spray and ribbon motif on the lid with an engine-turned wavy linear pattern on the reverse. The interior contains a hinged compartment door with a circular swirl engine-turned pattern and the original fabric powder puff marked Zell Fifth Avenue in gold script. The circular Zell Fifth Avenue compact features an embossed floral and scroll lid, a concentric circular engine-turned reverse, an internal mirror, and a hinged powder door with a matching circular swirl engine-turned pattern. It includes its original fabric powder puff marked Zell Fifth Avenue. The square Elgin American compact is decorated with an engraved Orientalist-style scene of plum blossoms and bamboo-like foliage. Its interior features a hinged metal door with vertical pinstripe and dot engine-turned patterns, stamped in the center with Elgin American MADE IN U.S.A. around a rectangular unengraved cartouche. All compacts utilize hinged lids with push-button or clasp mechanical latches.
