Lot 241:
Description
This is a ceremonial spiked helmet associated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), an American fraternal organization. The helmet follows the general aesthetic of late 19th-century military headgear, such as the German Pickelhaube and the United States M1881 dress helmet. The construction consists of a rounded crown covered in black wool or felt fabric with a matching stitched visor. It is topped with a tall, conical, brass-toned metal spike mounted on a circular base. A distinctive yellow fabric panel is attached to the rear of the helmet, featuring black cord embroidery in the form of three interlinked rings. These rings represent the IOOF motto of Friendship, Love, and Truth. The helmet includes two stamped brass-toned side buttons featuring a stylized sunburst design. The interior is fitted with an off-white drawstring cotton liner and a dark brown leather sweatband.
