Description

This group consists of three pieces of WWII-era United States military canvas field equipment: a pair of M1938 dismounted leggings and a M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) spare barrel and tool case. The leggings are size 3 and were manufactured by Gregory & Read Co. as indicated by internal black ink stamps. They bear the Navy Bureau of Supplies and Accounts contract code NXSX 23636 and are dated February 16, 1943. Construction consists of heavy khaki canvas (OD #3) with blackened brass eyelets and lacing hooks, and webbed adjustment straps with metal buckles. Both leggings are hand-inscribed in black ink with the name STEWART and STEWART D. The BAR spare barrel and tool case is constructed from olive drab canvas (OD #3). It features a long longitudinal sleeve for a spare barrel and a side pouch for maintenance tools secured by a flap with a leather strap. The reverse side includes two leather loops and two metal buckles for attachment to a vehicle or pack. A faint U.S. stamp is present on the front flap.
