Description
This is the inaugural issue of the periodical World’s Columbian Exposition Illustrated, published in Chicago by James B. Campbell and dated February 1891. This large-format folio publication was produced in advance of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition to promote the fair and document its early developmental stages. The front cover features a large engraved portrait of Hon. Thomas W. Palmer, President of the World’s Columbian Commission. The interior contains numerous full-page and half-page wood-engraved illustrations, including early views of the fair site, maps of the Chicago park system, and architectural renderings. Significant content includes a bird’s-eye map of the exposition grounds and an illustration of the proposed but never built 1,500-foot Chicago Columbus Tower. The back cover features a full-page advertisement for the Grant Locomotive Works and Bogue and Company Real Estate. The publication is bound in its original illustrated paper wrappers. 10×16
