Description
This collection includes three two-tone stoneware jugs of various sizes and origins. The first is a small advertising syrup jug for the Raccoon Mountain Sorghum Co. based in Pisgah, Alabama. It is constructed with a narrow mouth, a single loop handle, and a cork stopper. The exterior features a Bristol-style tan body with a dark brown glazed shoulder and neck. The front is decorated with black printed graphics of sorghum stalks and a detailed label specifying the product as open kettle process sugar cane sorghum made on their farm. The base is incised with the letters U S A. The second is a large utilitarian shoulder jug featuring a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze on the upper third and a light cream-colored glaze on the body. It has a narrow mouth and a single loop handle. The base is unmarked and shows a central circular indentation from the manufacturing process. The third is a medium-sized stoneware jug manufactured by Pearson’s of Chesterfield in England. It features a brown glazed shoulder, a tan salt-glazed body, a pinched pouring spout, and a double-ribbed loop handle. The front displays black printed German text listing various spirits including whiskey, cognac, vodka, rum-blend, korn, and wine, ending with a caution to the user. The base bears a black printed backstamp confirming the maker and the establishment date of 1810. 6, 8.5, 9.5 inches tall.
