Description
This large hand-woven wool textile is a Mexican serape or rug, likely of Zapotec origin. The piece is constructed of two woven panels joined by a central vertical seam. The central rectangular panel features a light blue ground depicting the Mexican national emblem, which shows a brown eagle with outstretched wings perched atop a nopal cactus while clutching a red snake in its beak. The cactus is composed of white and light green segments with red prickly pear fruit. This central motif is enclosed by a solid orange-yellow border. The surrounding field consists of alternating wide and narrow horizontal stripes in black, cream, and varied shades of blue. The wider black stripes are embellished with small, repeating geometric and floral diamond motifs in red, white, green, and yellow. The ends of the textile are finished with a short, simple fringe.49×72
