Description
17.5 in tall. A decorative gazing ball, also known as a witches ball, housed within a cast metal cage. The object consists of a large spherical glass orb featuring a gold-to-copper iridescent metallic coating. The orb is encased in a spherical metal cage constructed of two hinged hemispheres. The cage bands are decorated with embossed foliate scroll patterns. The cage is supported by a central stem and flanked by two large ornate foliate scroll handles and two smaller lower scrolls. The assembly rests on a circular cast iron base decorated with radiating acanthus leaf and bead-and-reel motifs. The letters D and S are partially visible on the right side of the foot rim, while other markings are present but obscured by oxidation.
