Lot 160B:
Description
This cotton bed quilt is worked in the Marie Webster May Tulips pattern, a design popularized in the mid-20th century. The quilt features a repeating block design of stylized floral medallions hand-appliqued onto an off-white or cream ground. Each medallion block consists of a central quatrefoil motif in a pink, blue, and white floral print, surrounded by eight radiating green leaves and four corner tulip buds. The tulip buds are composed of the same floral print topped with light blue fabric caps. The blocks are joined by wide plain sashing. The entire quilt is finished with hand-quilted diagonal grid stitching throughout. The reverse side features a coordinated backing fabric with a dense pink and blue leaf-and-branch print on a white ground. The construction shows characteristics of domestic production, including variations in hand-quilting stitch tension and length. 72×86
