Description
This lot includes an original 1950s oil painting on canvas board and a comprehensive historical archive documenting Chagrin River Beach in Solon, Ohio. The painting, titled The Old Dance Hall, is executed in a representational folk-art style using stippled brushwork to depict a weathered wooden building surrounded by tall trees. The work is signed KAMIS and dated 1954 in black paint in the lower right corner. The verso is inscribed in pencil T. KAMIS 10/54 and features an ink-written label identifying the location as Chagrin River Beach on Bainbridge Road and noting that the work was created from a 1953 pencil sketch made during a family picnic. Accompanying the painting is a three-ring archival binder titled Chagrin River Beach: Our Early Years, compiled by Tom Kamis between 2011 and 2013. This binder contains a hand-drawn map of the site dated 2011, original pencil sketches of the building dated 1953, several pages of typewritten personal and family narratives, and an assortment of vintage black-and-white photographs from 1936 through the 1950s documenting family gatherings at the location.
