Description
9.5 in diameter. This pair of antique hot water warming plates consists of ceramic plates set into deep metal bases. These utilitarian items were designed to be filled with hot water through a side spout to keep food warm during service. The ceramic inserts feature underglaze transfer-printed floral decorations. The first plate features an underglaze blue floral pattern with a central medallion and scrolled borders. The second plate features a pink or red floral transfer decoration with an intricate foliate border. Both ceramic plates are mounted into basin-like metal housings, likely constructed from tinned copper or pewter. Each housing is equipped with two looped side handles and a cylindrical fill spout. The blue plate includes a brass screw-on cap for its spout. No maker marks or factory stamps are visible on the ceramic or metal components.
