Description
7 and 9 inches tall. Pitcher 8 inches.Two Royal Doulton glazed earthenware pitchers in the manufacturer’s Series Ware line, dating to the early 20th century. Both vessels feature a waisted, tapered form with a flared rim and base. The larger pitcher is decorated in The Watchman pattern (D1460) and features a night watchman in a brown cloak and tricorn hat with a lantern and staff. A side banner reads Watchman What of the Night. The rim and base are accented with sepia-toned foliate scrollwork and a green band around the neck. The base bears the Royal Doulton lion and crown backstamp, the registration number Rd No 383566, and the hand-painted pattern number D1460. The smaller pitcher is decorated in the Coaching Days of England pattern (D1242). It depicts a man in a top hat and longcoat, often identified in the series as Ye Squire, alongside scenes of horse-drawn stagecoaches and an old English inn. The interior rim features a banner reading ENQUIRE YE PASSENGER. The base is marked with the Royal Doulton backstamp and the hand-painted pattern number D1242.
