Description

14.5×14.5 A 19th-century double-sided wooden game board of folk art origin featuring two distinct playing layouts. One side displays an 8×8 grid for chess or checkers, constructed with inlaid or applied wooden squares in alternating dark and reddish-brown tones. This playing surface is surrounded by a wide border and an outer mitered frame. The reverse side features a layout for the game of Nine Men’s Morris, also known as Mill or Merels, consisting of three concentric squares connected by four lines at the midpoints of the sides to form 24 intersection points. The piece is handcrafted from solid hardwoods with visible grain and is assembled using small nails. No maker’s marks, signatures, or dates are present on the board.
