Lot 10:
Description
A collection of silhouette portraits and miniatures in various mediums and frames. The group includes examples executed in cut-paper, pen and ink, and cross-stitch needlework on silk and linen grounds. Subjects primarily consist of profile portraits of men and women in period attire, as well as a more complex domestic scene depicting a seated woman reading to a child and a hand-colored profile of a military officer. One oval silhouette is signed lower center Susanna Clark. Two circular miniatures retain original labels on the verso identifying the subjects as George Washington and Martha Washington, published by Foster Bros. of Boston and Arlington, Massachusetts. A square black frame features a red and gold Borghese label on the reverse. One work includes a handwritten inscription on the paper backing with provenance mentioning Aunt Ethel. The assortment of frames includes gilt-finished rectangles, black-painted ovals and circles, and polished natural wood.
