Description
68 x 94 Handmade patchwork quilt top constructed in a strip-quilt or string-quilt style. The textile consists of horizontal bands of varying printed decorator fabrics. The primary face showcases a large-scale Chinoiserie-style print of lotus blossoms and bamboo on a cream ground, interspersed with narrower strips of floral, geometric, and striped patterns. The secondary side features a denser arrangement of varied fabric strips. Construction materials appear to be cotton or cotton-blend, with some fabrics exhibiting a slight sheen characteristic of polished cotton or chintz. Several fabric panels are joined using decorative yellow hand-embroidery in a herringbone or cross-stitch pattern. Integrated fabric selvages contain printed text including A SCREEN PRINT PROTECTED, DUPONT TEFLON SOIL AND STAIN REPELLER, STEINBERG FOR QUAKER, and CORPORATION MCM… FOR QUAKER. These marks identify the source materials as commercial upholstery-grade fabrics from the Quaker Fabric Corporation, including designs by Steinberg. The assembly reflects American folk-art quilting traditions from the late 20th century.
