Description
66 x 84 This is a hand-stitched American folk art quilt executed in the traditional Pine Burr or Pinecone pattern. The construction technique involves small squares of cotton fabric folded into triangles and sewn onto a foundation fabric in overlapping concentric layers, creating a dense, three-dimensional texture. The quilt top features nine large circular medallions arranged in a three-by-three grid. The fabric choices include a diverse array of mid-20th-century cotton scraps, featuring various calico prints, ginghams, stripes, solids, and polka dots. The reverse is composed of multiple hand-quilted panels of a heavy-weight grey cotton fabric, possibly ticking or denim. This style of quilt is historically significant as the state quilt of Alabama and is associated with African American and Lumbee quilting traditions. No maker’s marks or signatures are present. Three small detached fabric fragments are included.
