Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 434:
Description
56 x 60 This handmade textile is a patchwork and embroidered wall hanging or small quilt, composed of eighteen individual square blocks arranged in a three-by-six grid. The construction follows the Crazy Quilt style, utilizing an array of materials including silk, satin, velvet, and printed cotton fabrics. Decorative motifs featured within the blocks include a bow tie, various star configurations, diamonds, and an X-shape. A prominent feature is the extensive use of hand-embroidered feather stitching in multiple thread colors, which outlines the individual patches and joins the blocks together. The textile is backed with a later-period striped cotton fabric in shades of brown, orange, cream, and white, and is finished with a simple red fabric binding around the outer edges.
