Description
60 x 86 A vintage handmade patchwork quilt top, likely dating from the mid-20th century. The piece is constructed from a variety of cotton and cotton-blend fabric scraps arranged in an irregular grid of rectangular and square blocks. The selection includes solid colors in shades of blue, orange, red, and navy, alongside multi-colored striped fabrics and several distinctive mid-century novelty prints. Notable novelty motifs include a bowling theme featuring blue pins and black bowling balls (one with a smiley face), an illustrated golfer, and various vintage-style automobiles. One light blue section displays Roman numerals including I, IV, VI, IX, and XI. Additionally, several white patches feature a heraldic-style crest with the letters D, D in a stylized font. The assembly suggests a vernacular "memory quilt" style, potentially utilizing scraps from boys’ clothing or pajamas from the 1950s or 1960s. The piece remains in an unfinished state, consisting only of the pieced top layer without batting or backing.
