Description
74 x 80 This mid-20th-century American utility scrap quilt is hand-pieced and hand-quilted. The top features an improvisational patchwork design using a variety of period cotton fabrics, including florals, polka dots, plaids, checks, and solid colors in shades of blue, red, pink, and tan. The construction is asymmetrical, blending structured block elements with spontaneous piecing. A wide, plain white cotton border and binding finish the piece. The reverse is constructed from multiple repurposed white cotton feed or flour sacks stitched together. Several printed commercial graphics from the original sacks remain visible, including diamond-shaped logos in green and orange ink. One green diamond contains stylized, overlapping characters interpreted as P and S, with the letters EX to the left and TE below. Other fragments of industrial graphics and lettering are present across the backing. The quilting is executed by hand in a simple linear pattern following the horizontal orientation of the quilt, with some decorative block and circular outlines.
