Description

62 x 80 A pair of vintage American patchwork scrap quilts, dating from the mid-20th century. The first quilt features a large saltire or X pattern composed of small, multi-colored rectangular scrap patches in various floral, gingham, and calico prints. This central design is framed by solid purple triangular panels and outer panels of assorted block-patterned squares. It is finished with mismatched side borders, one featuring a red and blue paisley print and the other a brown floral pattern. The quilt exhibits hand-quilted diamond and straight-line stitching. The second quilt displays an all-over hexagon mosaic or honeycomb pattern, featuring a randomized scrap arrangement of mid-century prints including bold florals, stripes, medallions, and paisley motifs. This piece is hand-pieced with visible hand-quilted running stitches throughout. Both items are constructed from various cotton and cotton-blend printed and solid fabrics.
