Description
66 x 76 This is a mid-20th-century American hand-quilted patchwork quilt, likely dating from the 1930s to the 1950s. The quilt features sixteen blocks arranged in a four-by-four grid. Each block contains a central multi-point motif resembling a star or petal, commonly identified as the Hummingbird or Periwinkle pattern. These motifs are constructed in a scrap or string style using a wide variety of period cotton and cotton-blend fabrics, including floral prints, stripes, solids, and various plaids. The blocks are separated by yellow sashing strips with small multi-colored plaid squares at each intersection. The textile is finished with a wide plaid border along the top edge. The piece is hand-quilted throughout in a simple horizontal linear pattern. The reverse side is composed of plain off-white cotton fabric, showing the hand-stitched running stitches.
