Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 222:
Description
96 x 96 This is an unfinished handmade applique quilt top featuring a stylized floral motif. The piece is constructed from a lavender-purple cotton or cotton-blend ground fabric with turquoise-aqua sashing and border panels. The design consists of four repeating blocks, each depicting a tan-colored vase or urn containing three tulip-like flowers and green foliage. The flowers are composed of orange outer petals with centers that are either solid purple or feature a purple-and-white checkered pattern. The applique elements are made from a soft, non-fraying material and are secured to the ground fabric with decorative hand-stitching, including blanket-stitching and cross-stitching in contrasting thread colors. The reverse side reveals the hand-stitched construction and confirms the item is a single layer without batting or backing. The design reflects a folk-art aesthetic characteristic of mid-20th-century American kit-style needlework.
