Description
68 x 70 This American utility scrap quilt dates from the mid-20th century, approximately 1930 to 1950. The piece is hand-pieced and hand-quilted in an improvisational style that incorporates elements of traditional Log Cabin and Court House Steps patterns, specifically resembling a Housetop or Half-Log Cabin variation. The quilt top is constructed from a wide variety of period cotton scrap fabrics including calicos, ginghams, small-scale florals, solids, and various checks and plaids in a palette primarily of blues, tans, and reds. The central composition of irregular blocks is framed by a wide border of tan, green, and black plaid fabric. The entire surface is hand-quilted in a dense Baptist Fan pattern characterized by concentric arcs of running stitches. The backing consists of a solid medium-blue utility cotton with a fine horizontal texture, featuring a large make-do patch of the border plaid fabric integrated into one corner. The binding is finished with a separate blue and white striped fabric.
