Antiques Quilts and Toppers
Lot 179:
Description
66 x 76 An unfinished vintage quilt top featuring the Dresden Plate pattern, characteristic of American folk quilting from the mid-20th century. The piece is constructed of square cream cotton background panels arranged in a diagonal on-point orientation. Hand-appliqued to these panels are circular blocks, each composed of approximately ten wedge-shaped fabric scraps in a variety of prints and solids, including florals, ginghams, checks, and stripes. These scraps are consistent with dress and feedsack fabrics of the period. The blocks are secured to the background using a decorative red blanket stitch. The individual wedges and the background squares are joined with a combination of machine and hand-sewing. A large, unfinished strip of solid green cotton fabric is partially attached to one edge with a simple running stitch. This is an unfinished top only
