Description
60 x 84 This vintage hand-appliqued scrap quilt features the Sunbonnet Sue pattern, composed of forty-two individual blocks arranged in a six-by-seven grid. Each block depicts a figure of a girl in a bonnet, hand-appliqued using various patterned and solid scrap fabrics, including calicos, florals, stripes, and ginghams. The figures are outlined with decorative green hand-stitching, consistent with a blanket or buttonhole stitch. The quilt is constructed with a tied technique featuring small blue yarn ties at the intersections of the blocks. The backing is a lightweight fabric with a dense, small-scale multi-color floral print in shades of yellow, pink, blue, and green on an off-white ground. The piece is finished with a narrow floral border that matches the backing fabric. Materials appear to be cotton or a cotton-synthetic blend.
