Description
76 x 82 An American quilt featuring the Umbrella Girl pattern, which is a variation of the traditional Sunbonnet Sue motif. The quilt consists of sixteen square blocks arranged in a four-by-four grid. Each block features a central figure of a girl wearing a bonnet and a wide-skirted dress, carrying an open umbrella, shown from a rear-view perspective. The applique is constructed from a variety of polychrome cotton fabrics, including floral calicos, solid colors, and a novelty print featuring vintage toys such as sailboats and cars. The figures are detailed with black and colored embroidery for the umbrella handles, dress outlines, and bows. The blocks are joined by pink cotton sashing and finished with a thin floral print binding. The piece displays extensive hand-quilting throughout in fan and diamond patterns. The reverse side is finished with a plain, off-white cotton backing.
