Description
This lot features a pair of rectangular embossed brass gift boxes commissioned by the Princess Mary Sailors and Soldiers Christmas Fund. These tins were produced as a holiday gift for members of the British, Colonial, and Indian Armed Forces serving at the front or at sea during Christmas 1914. The lid of each box displays a central embossed profile portrait of Princess Mary within a laurel wreath, flanked by stylized M monograms. The upper edge features a scroll reading IMPERIUM BRITANNICUM beneath a crown, and the lower cartouche is embossed with CHRISTMAS 1914. The corners and sides are decorated with the names of the Allied nations including BELGIUM, JAPAN, FRANCE, RUSSIA, MONTENEGRO, and SERVIA. The left tin includes an original printed paper gift card featuring a red crown and M monogram above the date 1914. The interior of the lid on the left tin contains a handwritten name in pencil that appears to read G. G. Manson. The right tin shows a dark circular residue on the interior base, likely from the original tobacco or candy contents.
