Description
This is a lunchbox-style metal tobacco tin for Patterson’s Seal Cut Plug, manufactured by the R.A. Patterson Tobacco Company of Richmond, Virginia. The rectangular tin features a hinged lid, a wire bale handle, and a wire loop latch. The exterior is decorated with a lithographed yellow and black faux-wicker basketweave pattern on all four sides and the top. The front face displays a scalloped circular seal featuring a central image of a seal (animal) with the text Established 1856 and Full Weight. The perimeter of the seal reads R.A. Patterson Tobacco Co. Richmond, VA. Along the bottom edge of the front is the inscription The American Tobacco Company, Successor. The lid is printed in black script with Patterson’s Seal Cut Plug It’s the Quality. The reverse side features a printed factory notice for Factory No. 42, 2nd Dist. of VA. Fragments of a blue-green paper revenue tax stamp are present on both ends, with one side showing the number 16. The bottom of the tin has a plain gold-toned metallic finish.
