Description

This is an antique cast iron waffle iron manufactured by the Griswold Manufacturing Company of Erie, Pennsylvania. The unit consists of two circular paddles featuring an internal square grid pattern divided into quadrants, joined by a ball-and-socket hinge that allows the plates to be rotated 360 degrees. The paddles sit within a high-profile cast iron base, a design intended for use over the open burners of wood-burning or early gas stoves, providing necessary clearance to flip the iron without lifting it from the base. The handles are fitted with coiled steel wire cool-surface grips designed to dissipate heat. The exterior of the top paddle is embossed with the Griswold logo, featuring a cross inside a circle with GRISWOLD centered. Surrounding text reads AMERICAN NO 8 and THE GRISWOLD MFG. CO. ERIE PA. U.S.A. PAT’D DEC. 1. 1908. The pattern number 885 and the letter F are embossed near the hinge. The handles of the high base are embossed with NO 8.
