Description

An antique Columbia Type Q Graphophone, a mechanical cylinder phonograph produced by the Columbia Phonograph Co. and American Graphophone Co. around the turn of the 20th century. The unit features a spring-wound mechanical motor mounted to a black-enameled cast-iron base with a quarter-sawn oak wooden platform and a matching curved oak cover. The upright metal support is embossed with the text THE GRAPHOPHONE TYPE Q and patent dates including May 4 1886, Dec 27 1887, April 3 1888, June 10 1890, Oct 15 1894, March 20 1897, August 16 1900, and August 28 1900. The end of the cylinder mandrel is marked with manufacturer and sales agent information, listing numerous international cities including Paris, Berlin, Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, San Francisco, and New York. The oak lid retains its original wood handle and features a colorful banner decal reading The GRAPHOPHONE. The black base is decorated with gold pinstriping and a small floral motif.
