Description
This 19th-century American primitive country desk is constructed primarily of pine with a warm, aged patina. The design features a sloped, hinged lid that opens to a large storage well containing a single fixed shelf at the rear. The desk is supported by four tapered square legs and features nailed construction. It is equipped with simple iron butt hinges and a mortise lock, though the key is not present. Attached to the exterior of one front leg is a black cast iron candle sconce with a simple cup and curved arm. This utilitarian piece is characteristic of desks used by school masters, clerks, or storekeepers during the period.
