Description

This is a specialized industrial millinery or straw braiding sewing machine rebuilt by Feldman Machine Works of New York. The machine features a heavy cast iron pedestal frame with a black japanned enamel finish. It is designed with a narrow cylindrical bed, often referred to as a cylinder arm, which allows for the sewing of tubular or shaped items such as hats. The mechanical assembly includes an overhead thread tension system, a vertical needle bar, a presser foot, and a side-mounted handwheel with a grooved pulley for a belt drive. The machine is mounted onto a rectangular cast iron base plate. Visible markings include a multi-colored label on the front of the body that reads REBUILT BY FELDMAN MACH. WKS. NEW YORK N.Y. surrounding a central circular logo with the intertwined letters FMW. Below this label is a small metal plate stamped with the serial number 1236. The polished metal cover of the cylindrical bed is stamped with the number 710 in multiple locations. Feldman Machine Works was a noted specialist in the mid-20th century for refurbishing and customizing industrial sewing equipment for the New York garment and millinery districts.
