Description
A wall-mounted decorative bell in the Gothic Revival style, frequently identified as a monastery or convent bell. The piece features a highly ornate cast brass mounting bracket with scrolled architectural motifs, fleur-de-lis, and a central winged female figure. The bracket includes a horizontal support arm accented with bird-headed gargoyle figures. The suspended bell is decorated in high relief with the symbols of the four Evangelists, including the human figure for Saint Matthew and the winged lion for Saint Mark. A Latin inscription is cast around the shoulder of the bell reading QUI ME TANGIT VOCEM MEAM AUDIT, meaning He who touches me hears my voice. The bell is operated by a pull chain terminating in a large, ornate handle with scrollwork decoration.
