Description

This is an antique American kettle constructed from spun sheet brass, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. The body features characteristic fine horizontal striations from the spinning process and is finished with a rolled rim. The vessel is equipped with two heavy cast brass handle brackets, or ears, which are secured to the body with large, hand-set copper rivets. A thick, wrought iron bail handle is attached for carrying. The base of the kettle is stamped with a circular maker mark that reads THE AMERICAN BRASS KETTLE MANUFACTURE with a central numeral 1, which traditionally indicates a one gallon capacity. This type of brassware was a primary industry of the Naugatuck Valley in Connecticut during the 19th century.
