Description
This collection contains an assortment of North American archaeological and trade items, including a stone gorget, a pottery bead, a carved bone bead, and a strand of glass trade beads. The stone gorget is an oblong, flattened specimen made from a dark reddish-brown siltstone or slate, featuring a single biconically drilled hole. It is attributed to the Woodland period and specifically to Mahoning County, Ohio, as indicated by a collector tag marked Mah-Co-Oh. The pottery bead is a thick, discoidal specimen of low-fired reddish-brown ceramic with a central perforation. The carved bone bead is segmented with bulbous sections and shows a porous texture and an old fracture at one end. The strand of cobalt glass trade beads dates to the historic contact period, likely 18th to 19th century, and consists of irregular, translucent dark blue beads with visible internal bubbles and surface pitting. The stone gorget represents a form of personal adornment characteristic of the prehistoric Woodland period, while the glass beads reflect the historic trade networks established during European contact. These items are presented in a glass-topped display case with accompanying collector tags identifying the pieces.
