Description
12×14 This stipple engraving, titled The WIFE of BATH, is presented in an oval format and depicts a romantic scene between a man and a woman in period dress. The image is executed using a fine network of dots to create soft tonal transitions, a characteristic of the stipple engraving technique. Below the central image, a separate rectangular text panel contains the title and a two-line verse: Approach, my spouse, and let me kiss thy cheek; / Thou should’st be always thus, resign’d and meek. This verse is taken from Alexander Pope’s translation/imitation of the Wife of Bath’s Prologue from Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. A clear plate mark indentation is visible around the perimeter of the oval and the text area. The print is set within a black mat and housed in a highly ornate, gilded wood frame featuring a scrolling foliate pattern. The reverse bears a label from J & J Frame Studio, Inc. in Durham, NC, along with handwritten dimensions. Frame: 14.25 x 11.25 inches.
