Description
19×23 This historical military painting is executed in a representational style, likely in oil or acrylic on board, and is signed JOHN STANFORD in red in the lower right corner. The scene depicts a group of four African American Union cavalrymen, identified as Buffalo Soldiers, riding through a snowy winter landscape. The soldiers are dressed in blue uniforms with yellow-gloved hands and yellow accents on their boots. One soldier to the right carries a guidon flag with a red top half and a white bottom half containing a red letter R. The background features a wintry lake or river under a hazy sky, with a large tree on the right and a fallen log on the left. The painting is housed in a simple, dark wood molded frame. The back of the piece is covered with a black backing board and includes a hanging wire.
