Description

17 x 9 inches. A framed English ceramic tile diptych featuring an Orientalist scene of a woman in traditional Japanese dress. The artwork is composed of two vertically stacked ceramic tiles that form a single cohesive image. The subject depicts a woman in a green floral kimono with a red patterned obi, holding a teacup and saucer. She is positioned next to a low, dark wood table set with a teapot, two cups, and a potted plant. A trailing branch of maple leaves extends from the upper right side. The background features a textured, cream-colored finish. The tiles are housed in a dark wood frame carved in a faux-bamboo style. The piece utilizes the hand majolica painting technique with raised outlines, known as tube-lining or cuerda seca, to separate the various colored glazes and create a three-dimensional effect. The reverse of the piece features two D-ring hangers and a printed cream adhesive label. The label reads: The revival of an ancient craft / Hand Majolica painting / Majolica painting of ceramic tiles was at its height in the second half of the 19th century and Maw’s who specialised in this form of decoration were the leaders in this field. / This expertise has laid dormant at Maw’s until its re-introduction in 1974 when local craftsmanship was united in an effort to revive what was a forgotten art… today Maw’s have an extensive range of Majolica paintings which include re-introductions from the Victorian period, limited editions, wall murals, series and individual items. / MAW & CO. / Highgate Tile Works – Tunstall – Stoke-on-Trent / England / Telephone: Stoke-on-Trent 85611.
