Description
This barrel butter churn is constructed of vertical oak staves held by four black-finished iron hoops. The barrel is mounted on a two-post wooden trestle stand with four horizontal stretchers, designed to rotate end-over-end. A large cast iron hand crank with a turned wooden handle is fitted to one side of the barrel. The opposite end features a heavy cast iron locking mechanism that secures a circular wooden hatch door. This door includes a central circular glass sight hole or peep glass. A metal drainage spigot with a T-handle is located at the center of the barrel side. On one end of the barrel, a circular cast iron plate is mounted with four screws. The plate features raised lettering in a circular arrangement reading STANDARD CHURN CO. at the top, WAPAKONETA in the center, and OHIO at the bottom. The maker’s name and location are clearly legible despite surface oxidation.
