Description

10 inches long. Warthog tusk. This piece is a scrimshawed African warthog tusk featuring a hand-etched safari scene. The decoration, rendered in black ink, depicts a landscape with three African elephants walking among acacia-style trees and grass. A signature is hand-lettered on the far right of the decorated panel, reading LAWRENCE TSHUMA. The tusk is composed of natural ivory with visible growth ridging and a polished cream-colored surface on the decorated side. The underside of the tusk reveals natural grooves and a brownish patina. One end of the tusk is hollowed out, showing the interior pulp cavity with organic staining.
