Description

11 inches tall. A 19th-century American salt-glazed stoneware jug featuring a semi-ovoid body that tapers to a narrow neck with a flat-topped collar rim. The vessel is constructed with an applied strap handle and a natural cork stopper. The front is decorated with a hand-painted three-petaled stylized floral motif in cobalt blue slip. The exterior exhibits a traditional salt glaze finish with a characteristic orange peel texture and light gray color, accented by scattered brown iron spotting throughout the clay body. The underside of the base shows concentric wire-cut marks from its removal from the potter’s wheel and displays orange-tinted kiln effects. There are no maker marks, stamps, or capacity numerals present on the vessel.
