Description
This lot comprises two distinct pieces of studio pottery. The first item is a high-gloss salt-glazed stoneware ashtray with a tapered circular body. The exterior is decorated with horizontal bands of ochre, sienna, and dark charcoal. The interior well features concentric throwing rings. On the unglazed base, there is an incised script character resembling a capital letter J or a hook. Centrally located on the base is a circular stamp with an arched doorway device in the center; the upper curve of the stamp is impressed with the word BLOOMINGTON and the lower curve with the word POTTERY. Directly below this stamp are the impressed numbers 3 – 75. The second item is a ceramic bowl with a bulbous, slightly inward-curving rim. The exterior features a textured, matte light gray finish decorated with an incised and hand-painted frieze of yellow mushrooms with green stems, punctuated by small blue triangular motifs. The base of the bowl is unglazed and shows no maker’s marks or stamps.Measurements/notes: 3 pieces; 9 in. and 7 in. L.
