Description
A Japanese figural chess set composed of hand-carved pieces in both a natural cream tone and a stained reddish-brown finish. The set represents traditional Japanese figures: the kings and queens are depicted as robed nobility, the bishops as tonsured monks, the knights as samurai mounted on horseback, the rooks as four-tiered pagodas, and the pawns as kneeling attendants holding poles. The set is housed in a folding wooden case with an inlaid checkerboard surface of alternating light and dark wood veneers, secured by a decorative metal clasp. A gold-toned painted mark on the underside of a stained piece consists of two Japanese characters that read ?? (Hisaaki). A black ink inscription on the base of a natural-toned piece also bears the character ?.
