Description
37.5 in tall. This ceremonial sword and matching scabbard set belongs to the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus fraternal organization. The sword features a straight, slim, silver-tone metal blade with a rounded tip, typical of fraternal dress swords. The hilt is constructed with a silver-tone cast metal pommel in the shape of the head of Christopher Columbus. The grip is composed of a smooth, black composite material. The crossguard is ornately decorated, featuring a central medallion on the obverse depicting the Fourth Degree emblem: a globe surmounted by a cross and backed by an American eagle with wings spread. The reverse of the crossguard features a small square medallion with a cross pattee. The matching silver-tone metal scabbard is highly polished with embossed floral scrolls and heraldic motifs on the top locket and the elongated chape. The chape displays the primary Knights of Columbus emblem, which is a shield containing an anchor, a cross, and a dagger. A hand-written paper tag is attached to the hilt, reading: Fourth Degree Ceremonial Sword used by the KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. An auction tag is attached to the scabbard with the handwritten number 601. No manufacturer’s name or mark is clearly visible on the blade or scabbard. Blade length: 28 inches.
