Description
13×1.5 This circular advertising tray for Piel Bros. of Brooklyn, New York, is constructed of lithographed tin and dates to 1957. The tray features the popular animated mascots Bert and Harry Piel, who were the center of the brewery’s advertising campaigns during the mid-twentieth century. The illustration depicts a tall, slender Harry holding a pilsner glass of beer next to a shorter Bert who is pointing upward. Both characters are depicted wearing name-tag buttons: one reading I’m Harry Piel and the other Bert Piel. The left side includes the text ENJOY PIELS BEER, and a speech indicator above Bert reads NOW! The bottom of the tray features a blue band with the slogan The beer with a barrel of flavor! …because it’s cool-brewed. The outer rim is finished in yellow with blue serif lettering reading Piels LIGHT BEER. The reverse of the tray has a gold-tone wash and includes the manufacturer mark for the American Can Company. Marks: The bottom center of the tray face is marked copyright 1957 PIEL BROS. BROOKLYN N. Y. The reverse center features a circular maker’s mark for the American Can Company, transcribed as T.M. AMER. CAN CO. with CANCO inside an oval and REG. U.S. PAT. OFF. below.
