Description
This lot comprises two vintage American wooden shipping and storage crates featuring original stenciled commercial markings. The first is a WWII-era crate for railway fusees, manufactured by the Central Railway Signal Company, Inc. in Hammond, Indiana. Its nailed construction features stenciled text on multiple sides including FIREWORKS, I.C.C. 15B-45, HANDLE CAREFULLY KEEP FIRE AWAY, RAILWAY FUSEES, 1 GROSS, 7/8-5-MIN., RED NO SPIKE, and a date stamp of AUG. 44. The second crate is a Capewell Horse Nail Co. box from Hartford, Connecticut, characterized by its finger-jointed corner construction. Stenciling on the face includes the company name, a circular logo with C H N Co, 25 lbs., and the slogan The Best Driving Nail. The side panels are marked No. 8, Driving Nail, and HARTFORD, CONN.
