Description
40x16x17 This lot consists of two items: a late 19th-century mechanical dictionary stand and a 1949 edition of Websters New International Dictionary. The stand is manufactured by R.M. Lambie of New York and is constructed with a cast iron tripod base on casters supporting an adjustable central metal pillar. The assembly includes a square wooden shelf featuring three black-finished iron loop handles. The top of the stand is fitted with a specialized mechanical book cradle with two wooden leaves and cast iron hardware designed to allow for height and tilt adjustments. A cast iron plate on the underside of the cradle is embossed with the following: R.M. LAMBIE, NEW YORK, PATD. AUG. 27. 89, with additional patent dates ending in 4. 95 and 17. 95. The accompanying volume is Websters New International Dictionary of the English Language, Second Edition, Unabridged, with Reference History, published in 1949 by G. and C. Merriam Company. The dictionary is bound in burgundy pebbled buckram or leatherette with gilt-stamped lettering and emblems on the front cover and spine. It features a full set of alphabetical thumb-index tabs and marbled page edges. Interior contents include various black-and-white plates, such as Types of Naval Vessels, and a color frontispiece portrait of Noah Webster.
