Lot 434:
Description
A 19th-century Chinese Canton export carved ivory plaque of square form. The central high-relief scene depicts three figures in a garden setting; a central lady stands beneath a prunus tree, accompanied by a standing attendant on the left and a seated figure on the right. The background consists of a finely pierced reticulated lattice pattern. The right side is bordered by a vertical band of carved stylized bamboo. The panel is set in a polished yellow metal frame featuring three suspension loops along the top edge, likely for use as a pendant or chatelaine element. Cross-hatching Schreger lines are visible on the edges of the ivory, identifying the material as elephant ivory. 1.5 x 1.5 inches.
