Description

This is a significant collection of vintage medical stereoview cards, also known as stereographs, published for clinical study. The cards were produced by Dr. S. I. Rainforth (Selden Irwin Rainforth) of New York and are marked with a copyright date of 1901. This series was part of The Stereoscopic Skin Clinic, a specialized diagnostic teaching tool designed for medical schools and professional dermatologists in the early 20th century. Each card features two side-by-side photographic images that provide a three-dimensional view when used with a stereoscope, intended to help students perceive the elevation, depth, and texture of various skin pathologies. The images are printed on heavy dark gray or black cardstock and utilized a high-quality colorization process to accurately represent various clinical symptoms. The collection covers a broad spectrum of clinical dermatology. Transcribed titles from the cards include Sarcomatosis Cutis, Chloasma, Scleroderma, Epithelioma, Psoriasis, Morbilli, Zoster, Paronychia, Scabies, Erysipelas, Eczema Orbiculare, Lupus Vulgaris, Erythema Multiforme, Eczema Rubrum, Naevus Vascularis, Trichophytosis Corporis, Syphilis Papulo-Squamosa, Syphilis Tubero-Serpiginosa, Variola, Syphilis Circinata, Naevus Linearis, Lupus Erythematosus, Acne Indurata, Syphilis Pustulo-Crustosa, Trichophytosis Barbae, Tuberculosis Verrucosa Cutis, and Erythema Nodosum. Most cards feature the printed attribution: Copyright 1901 by Dr. S. I. Rainforth, N.Y.
